How AI can write SEO articles that rank for the long term

Introduction: most articles slide, and it is not by chance

An article that ranks is rarely an article that keeps ranking. The usual curve is well known: a peak after two to three months, a plateau, then a slow decline nobody notices because nobody compares two measurements.

The cause is almost never the quality of the writing. It is one of three:

  1. the intent has shifted — people search the same topic with a different expectation;
  2. the facts have aged — figures, versions, screenshots, prices;
  3. something better appeared — someone wrote what you had not written.

Durability is therefore not a property of the text, it is a property of the maintenance. This article covers what you can build in from the start to slow the decline, and what you have to do afterwards.

1. What makes an article durable — four properties

It answers an intent that does not shift. "How to restore a hacked WordPress site" barely changes. "Best WordPress plugin 2026" ages in its own filename. Choose knowingly: a topic with a year in it is a topic with an expiry date.

It contains something that cannot be copied. A figure you measured yourself, a mistake you made, a customer case. That is the only element a competitor will not rewrite in an hour — and therefore the only one that keeps setting you apart.

It names its limits. A text that says what the solution does not do ages more slowly than a text that promises everything, because the limits stay true when the rest changes.

Its facts are separated from its reasoning. Put figures, versions and prices in identifiable places. When refreshing, you update those without rewriting the text — and that is exactly the difference between a twenty-minute refresh and a half-day rewrite.

2. Where AI genuinely helps, and where it does not

Yes:

  • spotting the decline. Comparing two ranking measurements, page by page, and flagging what is sliding. Nobody does that every month by hand;
  • spotting shifted intent. When the results for your query change shape, that is a signal your page no longer answers what people expect;
  • spotting cannibalisation. Your own new article can push out the old one. It happens more often than people think and it is invisible without comparison.

No:

  • deciding whether the topic still matters to your business;
  • supplying the non-copyable element — it exists nowhere in the data;
  • deciding to stop. A page beyond saving gets dropped; that judgement stays human.

The full treatment of the strategic level is in what AI changes about SEO content creation.

3. The maintenance almost nobody does

This is the part that makes the difference, and it costs less than writing.

Every quarter, for each article that used to rank:

  • Has the position moved? Compare with the previous measurement, not with your impression
  • Are the facts still correct? Versions, figures, screenshots, prices
  • Is the intent still the same? Look at what now holds the top places
  • Are the links still valid? An article pointing at pages that have gone loses value
  • Is there anything to add that you have learned since?

Refreshing an article that already ranked pays off faster than writing a new one. It is the most under-used lever in search, and the reason is simple: refreshing is less satisfying than publishing.

Only update the modification date on a real modification. Changing the date without touching the content produces nothing and is detectable.

4. Three mistakes that kill a durable article

The year in the title. It forces an annual revision and dates the text even when the content is right.

The link to a page that does not exist yet. It sends your reader into a wall and devalues the article carrying it. Check every destination on disk before publishing — I broke that rule myself while writing this series, and the dead-link counter did not move while I thought I was making progress.

The article nobody ever reopens. A text you never look at again degrades silently. Put the quarterly check in the calendar, not in your memory.

5. Measuring, on the right timescale

Three measurements per article, and one rule: do not judge after three weeks.

  • impressions — move first;
  • average position — moves next;
  • clicks — move last.

If you do not keep control pages you leave untouched, you will credit your work with what was only the season. That is the most common measurement error, and it makes people abandon strategies that were working.

Conclusion

An SEO article does not rank durably because it is well written. It ranks durably because it answers an intent that does not shift, because it contains something that cannot be copied, and because somebody looks at it every quarter.

Artificial intelligence changes one thing here, but an important one: it makes the third condition sustainable. Going through two hundred articles by hand every quarter is something nobody does; comparing two measurements and flagging what is sliding is a calculation.

The test: name from memory the article on your site that has slid the most over the past twelve months. If you cannot, you are publishing articles but not maintaining them.
